Dr James Allebone
Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist
Mobile: 0487 039 818
I obtained a PhD and a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Melbourne and have since helped hundreds of people with a wide range of difficulties.
I enjoy helping people look deeply inside themselves to increase their awareness of inner psychological processes related to their difficulties. This helps people uncover and relinquish patterns of feeling, thinking, and relating that are causing their symptoms. By identifying these patterns and their origins, I help people free themselves from destructive internal mechanisms and achieve their goals.
My way of working is highly experiential, so I consistently examine how you are feeling in your body rather than merely examining what is happening in your conceptual mind.
By looking deeply into problems and identifying patterns that are causing difficulties, people can overcome their self-destructive tendencies, understand and integrate their past, and change their lives. This can be a painful, invigorating, and joyful process.
I can help with:
· Low mood and depression
· Anxiety
· Emotional problems (including anger and stress)
· Grief and loss
· Relationship difficulties
· Chronic pain
· Adjustment to neurological injury
· Recovery from trauma and abuse, including PTSD
· Functional neurological disorders
And many other problems.
I tailor therapy to each individual client based on their needs and capacities and utilise evidence-based therapeutic modalities drawn from the psychodynamic and cognitive traditions, including intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), internal family systems (IFS), and accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP).
Prior to beginning private practice in 2019, I worked across a range of healthcare settings, including treating functional neurological disorders, acquired brain injury inpatient and outpatient services (Epworth Healthcare Camberwell and Richmond, The Alfred Hospital), and a specialised concussion clinic (Epworth Hawthorn).
